Disciples Plotting a Return to the Garden
Disciples
have an appreciation for the table. After all, each Sunday morning,
Disciples approach the table in reverence, to accept bread and wine
(or juice) representing body and blood of Christ in honor of the
sacrifice Christ made for all of us.
But what would that table look like without the bread and wine?
The meal Disciples share would not be possible without nature's
ecological processes and those who work with those processes to
cultivate the wheat plants and the grape vines. To honor that table,
Disciples Home Missions and Yakama Christian Mission Center have
partnered to create Return to the Garden, a hands-on workshop on
starting community gardens.
For three days before General Assembly, 20 Disciples will have
an opportunity to gather in White Swan, Wash. (just a couple of
hours north of Portland), and learn how to organize a community
garden; understand the importance of locally-grown produce; explore
the spiritual benefits of working the earth; and relate gardening
to ecological stewardship, sustainable living, and social and eco-justice
issues.
Participants then will take their learnings to General Assembly's
VisionFest to share how-to resources with fellow Disciples at a
real garden constructed within the convention center. The long-term
goal is the establishment of community gardens across the country,
at least 50 in 2006! The workshop, designed as a pre-Assembly event,
takes place Wednesday July 20 to Saturday July 23.
