DHM poised to help with long-term relief efforts related to Katrina disaster

As details of the devastation wrought by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina came to light, Disciples immediately began responding with donations and calls to help.

"Disciples Volunteering, in coordination with Week of Compassion, plans to offer a variety of relief and recovery efforts in the coming months and years in response to this tragedy," said Carl Zerweck III, director of Disciples Volunteering, in response to those calls.

Refugee and Immigration Ministries, in cooperation with Church World Service, is working on a resettlement program for those displaced by the hurricane.

Meanwhile, a new Kids to Kids project is being planned that will provide Disciples a direct way to help children affected by this disaster.

Hurricane relief Mission Stations set up in affected areas: Volunteers needed now!

Members of Clintonville Christian Church (Paris, Ky.), which just celebrated 175 years of ministry, load a truck with health kits for tsunami survivors. Meanwhile, help also is needed at home.

To volunteer for hurricane relief, visit the DHM Web site for updated opportunities.

Special Web update: Working in partnership with Week of Compassion, the Office of Disciples Volunteering has created Mission Stations in some of the hardest-hit areas in the south.

Already, Disciples volunteers have a number of locations from which to choose. Each Mission Station has space for volunteers to stay, prepare meals, and provide meaningful, needed and safe work.

Hurricane relief efforts from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita represent only the immediate volunteer phase to this disaster. Other Mission Stations are being added as needed. Opportunities for volunteers to work after the first of the year, and into the future are being planned, as well as some opportunities with Habitat For Humanity.

Order your Harvest of Justice Table Prayers

2005 marks the 40th anniversary of the historic table grape strike begun by farm workers in Delano, Calif. In April 1967, one and a half years after it began, the United Farm Workers signed the first ever farm worker contract with a grower.

Despite a number of important farm worker victories, most recently the Coalition of Immokalee (Fla.) Workers, as many as two million undocumented farm workers harvest food produced and consumed in the United States. Many cannot speak English and are too intimidated to speak up for even the most basic human rights.

Learn more about farm worker issues in your congregation by sharing the Harvest of Justice Table Prayers during the four weeks between the Canadian and American Thanksgiving holidays, Oct. 10 to Nov. 24. Brochures of prayers in English or Spanish along with a worship resource are available from DHM at no charge. Additionally, for $7.50, you can receive a copy of the Blessing the Hands: A Farm Worker Curriculum Leader's and Participant's booklet, which is comprised of seven 45 to 60 minute self-contained sessions, designed for adult and high school groups and they include prayer, facts, scripture, activity, and suggested actions.
