A Message from Lonnie Graves

November 6, 2007
Indianapolis

If given a choice between a job or living apart from a spouse, some could make the decision quickly. If you add "following a ministry call" to the equation, would it be reason to change or modify one's decision? There are so many modifiers and variables to consider.

More than one thousand days ago I prayerfully considered many things when I answered the call from Disciples Home Missions to accept a Program Director position in the Office of Disciples Women. I will not forget returning to the hotel after the interview and calling my husband, with the surprising news that I had been offered the position. Quite gently he said. "I was praying for you while you were in the meeting." The final decision to accept the call included many days of prayer and many conversations with my husband and family. It was certainly a time of transition as we made plans to live in two states because my husband's business is seated in California.

With this transition there has also been some transformation as I have worked with women in ministry from the West Coast to the East and from North to South as trainer, speaker, workshop presenter and keynoter. I have been staff person directing the Women's Action Web journey from Washington D.C. through Virginia, and the Woman to Woman journey to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Among other things, I have also directed the Leadership Apprentice Program, and been the staff person responsible for Celebrations and education at the Mix in '06, the New Day Magazine, Called Gifted and Sent and a newsletter for the women of the National Convocation, and more.

Though I have always been hopeful that my position could be deployed, I recognize and respect that is not an option in the position I hold in the Office of Disciples Women. My husband and I have missed each other from the first day and knew this would happen. After three years, it is now time to check for balance, as I still honor my thirty-one year marriage covenant. I am so blessed to have a husband who respects my personal call, knowing that God can call us collectively or separately. I am reminded of Aquila and Priscilla when we have done ministry together, but recognize other women of the bible, Esther, Mary, Lydia who were called differently.

I will conclude my work in the Office of Disciples Women (and as Merger Staff for Women's Ministries for the National Convocation) at the end of January, 2008. My call to serve is still alive, and during this new time of transition I will again be listening and watching for God's direction as I feel there is still so much to do that will glorify God through Jesus Christ.

May God bless,
Lonnie
