Disciples disaster response
Frequently asked questions

  1. Can we choose our preferred locations and dates for our mission trip?
First, decide when you want to travel and then call us to see what locations are available. Then visit our Web site, complete the form and submit your request. After we receive the form, we will then follow up with either a phone call or an e-mail message to schedule your group into one of our mission sites.
  2. Where do we stay and what are the sleeping arrangements like at each mission station?
You will be staying in churches. Lake Charles, La., Slidell, La., and Algiers, La., have either bunk beds or roll-aways available. If you are not staying in either one of those mission stations we recommend bringing sleeping bags and/or air mattresses to sleep on. Each mission station also has shower facilities and kitchens for your use as well.
  3. If another group or congregation (that hasn't registered) wants to join us, do I need to let Disciples Home Missions know?
Yes, please contact Anne Marie Moyars at (888) 346-2631.
  4. Do we have to bring our own food or does someone prepare the food for us?
You are responsible for the purchase and preparation of your own food during your week. However, Port Arthur volunteers prepare breakfast and lunch at no additional cost to groups. There is no extra charge for the meals at Port Arthur. We advise groups who are preparing their own food to designate one or two people to be the cooks for the week. After working hard all day a meal that is waiting for the group is a welcome sight.
  5. Do we need to bring our own tools?
Each mission station has its own set of tools, but we recommend bringing some tools from home to supplement what we have at the mission site.
  6. What is the minimum number of people required and what is the minimum age to participate?
There is no minimum number of people required. The maximum group size is 25, except Algiers, La., which can accept 44 volunteers. We have scheduled individuals and couples who want to help in the rebuilding effort. Volunteers must be in the 9th grade or older.
  7. If I need to cancel my mission trip for any reason what should I do?
Please contact Anne Marie Moyars at (888) 346-2631.
  8. How can we help publicize this important work?
You can share this Web site address with your church. Also, you can download a brochure to print and share with your church and friends.
  9. Do I need to confirm our number of volunteers before traveling to a Mission Station?
Yes, please contact Anne Marie Moyars at (888) 346-2631.
