Disciples Women
Bread & Letters Together (BLT)
2005-2006 Common Service Project
Until June 2006, the Social Action Emphasis of Disciples Women is Daily Bread for All. This is the fourth emphasis, continuing what was begun by the International Christian Women’s Fellowship in 1989. During this Social Action Emphasis, all women and groups are asked to take some action around Hunger. The new common service project for all groups to participate in will begin in January of 2005 and end at the 2006 "Mix in ‘06" Quadrennial Assembly for women.

All congregations are asked to participate in this project. Its completion will be celebrated at the Mix in '06. See below for recipe to make a BLT.
Recipe to make a BLT (Disciples Women style)
- Start with Bread, the basic ingredient. When people are hungry, feed them. Jesus did. Read Matthew 15:32-38 to see how important it was to Jesus that hungry people be fed.
GIVE the equivalent of the cost of a loaf of your favorite bread each week or month for a period of time. Give this money to your local food pantry.** Each Disciples Women's group is asked to keep track of how much "bread," that is "dough" (money) is given between 2005 and April 30, 2006, and to report this amount to your regional office.
- The "L" of your BLT is made up of letters. Hunger will never end until we change the conditions that cause hunger. Working through Bread for the World (BFW), a Christian voice for ending hunger, we can write letters to members of Congress, the President, and other government officials, supporting legislative efforts to end hunger.

- The Bread for the World’s 2006 Offering of Letters campaign is called “One Spirit. One Will. Zero Poverty.” Dowload a form in PDF to order the Letter Kits. The order form also includes ordering information for free bulletin inserts in both Spanish and English and for the free BFW membership brochures.
For more information on the program visit www.bread.org.
Sponsor writing letters each time your group (regional, congregational, circle, or other) meets. You can view a sample letter by visiting www.bread.org/issues/letter_tips_and_sample_letter.html#sampleletter.
Keep track of and report to your regional office the number of letters written from 2005-April 30, 2006.
Optional side order on your BLT
Your congregation or region may decide to give a portion of the "bread" money collected to Church World Service for use in development projects. Contact them at (800) 297-1516 or www.churchworldservices.org to learn more.
Remember
A sandwich made up of bread alone is immediately filling but not long lasting. Bread & Letters Together bring more potential for ending hunger, insuring Daily Bread for ALL.
