Woman-to-Woman Worldwide 2006 Hispaniola

The island of Hispaniola is the home of Haiti and Dominican Republic

In the 2006 Called, Gifted & Sent leadership resource, Sandra R. Gourdet writes:

"In 2002, when I was assigned to work in Haiti through Global Ministries, I knew I did not want to make the mistake of categorizing women according to my perspective. I wanted to listen to women in this small, mountainous independent country in the West Indies, which shares the western third of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea with the Dominican Republic.

"Haiti, once called the Pearl of the West Indies, has more than eight million inhabitants in an agricultural and mostly rural society where women throughout the country's long, violent and bloody history have remained resilient and determined.

" ... Haiti has suffered tremendously since independence ... The limited education systems in place for the poor, coupled with inadequate social, economic and political support, make it very difficult for them to achieve upward social mobility. Not surprisingly, women and children bear the brunt of these injustices ... Despite such harsh realities, the strength of Haitian women can be seen everywhere."
