Disciples Disaster Response

About Disciples Mission Stations

Mission Stations were established at the end of 2005 to accommodate volunteers engaging in the immense recovery work required as a consequence of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This ministry is growing and evolving as Disciples Volunteering coordinates the response of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to new domestic disasters. Since 2005, more than 20 congregations have served as Mission Stations, from the Gulf Coast to Anchorage, Alaska.

Each Mission Station is set up at a Disciples church in an area that has been affected by a disaster. Following some disasters, Mission Stations are established in a covenantal relationship between the host congregation, Disciples Volunteering, Week of Compassion, and the Region or Area in which the disaster occurred. The host congregation provides a space for volunteers to sleep, prepare food, and shower either at or near the church. Disciples Volunteering staff run the on-going Mission Station operations. Please note that there is a non-refundable fee of $75 per person** to serve through a Mission Station. This non-refundable fee is due two weeks after a leader has submitted the on-line registration form. Space will be held during those two weeks; however, a reservation is not complete until the registration fee has been received.

** Volunteers interested in the Slidell, LA Mission Station - please note: Beginning January 1, 2011, Northshore Disaster Recovery, our work partner in Slidell, will have an additional $75 per person fee to cover the cost of materials.

For additional information, please contact the Mission Station Manager or Brenda Tyler.

Please respect our Covenant and do not contact the host congregation.

Group Size (Minimum & Maximum)

In order to be faithful stewards of available resources, groups with less than five volunteers will be partnered with another Mission Team. This may require flexibility in terms of desired location and/or date. Alternatively, a smaller group may choose to pay the registration for five volunteers even though they may be bringing less. The maximum group size varies by Mission Station; see below for details.

Age Limitations (Minimum)

Age limits are set by the long-term recovery organizations with whom we partner and they are not negotiable. Because our work partners vary by location, age limits also vary; see below for details.
