Call to Prayer and Action

Dear Disciples

This is a call to prayer and action! We are Christ’s disciples and that’s a big deal in this world in which we live. As the farmer sows seed in the ground for a harvest, likewise we live into the gospel by sowing the word of God’s grace, justice and mercy into the lives of others. By our prayers and actions that evidence God’s Spirit at work through us, we sow good news of hope!

To this end I want to share that the Joint Commission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the US and Canada and the Convention of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) is working to amplify efforts to save lives. We are mindful of the dire need of all our sisters and brothers in Puerto Rico and the nearby Virgin Islands among others in the wake of hurricanes Irma and Maria!

The members of the Joint Commission include the following:

Terri Hord Owens – General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Julia Brown Karimu – President of the Division of Overseas Ministries,  Sotello Long – President of Disciples Home Missions, and  Lori Tapia – National Pastor for Hispanic Ministries.

There are consultants who also attend meetings of the Joint Commission. The consultants include the following:

Gilberto Collazo – President  of Hope Partnership, Rick Reisinger – President of Church Extension, Todd Adams – President of the Pension Fund, Gary Kidwell – President of Christian Church Foundation, Angel Louis Rivera – Executive for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Members of the Joint Commission will be meeting with clergy and congregants in Puerto Rico next month. Pray for God’s favor and grace in being a sign of hope and an avenue of resources joined in the effort to save lives!

Here are some of the many ways Disciples are engaged in prayer and action to save the lives of our sisters and brothers hit by natural disasters:

God’s love,
