If you ever watch a movie with a moving theme song or a haunting melody and then watch it without sound, you realize how large a role the music plays in setting the tone, the direction, and the mood of the characters. I have a “Good Morning” playlist of songs that prepare me for the day which includes Mr. Blue Sky, Good to Be Alive, Everything Now, etc.
I have often felt that the music that pops up at different seasons in my life becomes the soundtrack of my life. As I answered my call to leave the East Coast and travel to Indiana to serve with Disciples Women, the song “Defying Gravity” became my soundtrack.
Some of the lyrics are:
“I’m through accepting limits ‘Cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change But ’til I try, I’ll never know!
Too long I’ve been afraid of Losing love I guess I’ve lost
Well, if that’s love It comes at much too high a cost!
I’d sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down”
“So if you care to find me Look to the western sky!
As someone told me lately “Everyone deserves the chance to fly!”
And if I’m flying solo At least I’m flying free”
There was so much going on in my life at the time that these lyrics spoke to; it emboldened me on my new adventure as I left all my places of comfort behind.
And, now, after ten years of ministry and contemplating retirement, the song “I Lived” seems to be my new soundtrack.
“I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
with every broken bone, I swear I lived”
What is the soundtrack to your life?
Lord of the Dance
Great is thy Faithfulness
Shine Jesus Shine
Or maybe, even,
I Hope You’ll Dance
My ‘soundtrack’ helps me to contemplate my current situation, dream, or stage of life.
Sing, dance, fear not!
