Throughout my life, I have had elders and mentors guide me through this journey called life. During my adolescent and younger adult years, I was blessed to have my grandmother, mother, godmother, and college mentor thoroughly invest in my spiritual, emotional, andprofessional growth. They gave me advice rooted in wisdom, knowledge, love, and lived experience. With the help of God (and I know a multitude of prayers), they taught me spiritual principles and life lessons that were invaluable and I still live by those principles today.
I cannot imagine who and where I would be if those elders, my “cloud of witnesses”, had not invested their time, care, and love into me. I know for sure I would not be the woman I am now. Through my experience with all of them, I also learned how critically important it is to teach and cultivate the generations coming behind me, which is why I do it with great joy!
In Titus Chapter 2, the older women are instructed to teach the younger women about life; this is what we are called to do. We are called to teach the younger women about the Love of God, the Blood of Jesus, and the Power of the Holy Spirit. We are called to share our wisdom, knowledge, and lived experiences so that they are equipped for life’s journey, especially as believers in Christ. We are called to show them what it means to live a life that honors God. We are supposed to teach them with honesty, transparency and vulnerability. We are called to show them God’s amazing grace, even when they don’t listen to our wisdom and suffer the consequences because of it. We have to be patient with them as Christ is with us when we don’t listen to Him. Remember, we are not called to change them; that is God’s business. We are called to plant seeds and God will water them so that they will grow. Now more than ever, our younger women need to know the wisdom of the older women. It is our responsibility to encourage and empower the next generations through love, compassion, and mentorship as God expects us to do. They are waiting on us.
