May 19, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

After the Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Disciples Home Missions hosted a panel discussion on Voting Rights, Faith, and Democracy that features:

  • Rev. Chris Dorsey President and CEO of Disciples Home Missions
  • Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner Founder of the Skinner Leadership Institute and Co-Convener of Faiths United to Save Democracy
  • Rev. Dr. Katie Sexton Executive Director of the Arizona Faith Network and a 2026 “The Vote Is Sacred” Fellow with Interfaith America
  • Rev. Brian Frederick-Gray (facilitator) Director for Justice and Advocacy Ministries at Disciples Home Missions

The panelist have a robust and insightful conversation about four specific issues:

  • How do we help people in the pews understand what’s been lost by this decision in Louisiana v. Callais — especially those who have only studied the Civil Rights Movement in History Class?
  • What scriptures, traditions, or spiritual teachings can you point us to that call us to protect the right to vote — especially for communities that have been historically excluded?
  • Parts of the wider church have historically been an organizing infrastructure for voting rights movements — from voter registration drives to candidate forums to transportation to the polls. What does that infrastructure look like today, and where are the gaps? What new tools, strategies, or coalitions do faith communities need to build for this moment?
  • If someone leaves this conversation and does one thing — one concrete act before the elections this Fall — what should it be?

Scripture Passages Cited

  • Proverbs 31:8
  • Matthew 25:35-40
  • Micah 6
  • Exodus
  • Psalm 11
  • Acts 2:1-21

Discussion Questions Going Forward

Once you’ve completed the video use the following questions for a small group conversation, for personal reflection, or as journaling prompts

  • What is your first memory of voting? Why is participating in the democratic process important to you? If it is not, why not?
  • What scripture passages, Christian traditions, or faith practices speak to you the most in this moment? What empowers you to work to protect voting rights and voter empowerment, particularly for communities that have been historically excluded?
  • If you were to follow Dr. Williams-Skinner’s invitation to “take five” then who would you included in your list of friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and/or colleagues that you will talk to in order to encourage them to exercise their right to vote this year? List them.
  • Building on what Rev. Dr. Katie Sexton said about “preparing your own personal voting plan,” how are you planning to exercise your right to vote this year? Be specific in your plans and build in an accountability system to help you follow through.

A Statement from Disciples Home Missions on Louisiana v. Callais and the Voting Rights Act

May 8, 2026
On April 29, 2026, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that guts the Voting Rights Act. It is now significantly harder to challenge redistricting maps for racial discrimination. For decades, courts could assess the impact of those maps—regardless of intent. That standard has been overturned. Disciples Home Missions receives this decision with grief and resolve.

A Statement from Disciples Home Missions on Louisiana v. Callais and the Voting Rights Act

May 8, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

On April 29, 2026, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that guts the Voting Rights Act. It is now significantly harder to challenge redistricting maps for racial discrimination. For decades, courts could assess the impact of those maps—regardless of intent. That standard has been overturned.

Disciples Home Missions receives this decision with grief and resolve.

A Hard-Won Legacy

The Voting Rights Act was the result of over a century of struggle. Many regarded it as a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. It was actually signed into law less than five months after peaceful marchers were violently attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. This history is not distant—it lives in the memories of our elders and in the ongoing work of our communities. The Court has been chipping away at this law for years. This ruling is the most damaging blow yet.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has spoken out on this before. In 2013, when the Supreme Court struck down a central provision of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder, the General Assembly meeting in Orlando, Florida, adopted GA-1337 calling on Congress to restore the protections that had been removed and declaring solidarity with all those working to ensure equal access to the vote. GA-1337 affirmed that voter suppression is still real—through gerrymandering, restrictive ID laws, intimidation, and unfair redistricting. Louisiana v. Callais continues that dismantling. Our response remains the same: we will not back down.

Why This Matters

Voting is how people who have been historically excluded from power make their voices heard. When the votes of minoritized communities are diluted or suppressed, their rights and wellbeing suffer. Their dignity is threatened and undermined.

In contrast, when those communities build coalitions with one another, they gain the collective strength to shape a democracy that works for everyone. The decision in Louisiana v. Callais makes coalition-building more urgent than ever. We all need to understand that we have a role to play in combatting this egregious decision.

What We Are Asking of Disciples

The faith community has always played a vital role in the struggle for voting rights. Churches and people of faith were at the center of the Civil Rights Movement—and they are needed now. We call on Disciples congregations and leaders to:

Help people vote.
Share information on how to register and where to vote. Encourage members to staff voter registration booths and serve as election protection volunteers.

Contact your state representatives.
Redistricting maps are drawn at the state level. Let your representatives know that, as people of faith, you stand against discrimination in all its forms.

Keep going.
Setbacks are real—but they must not paralyze us. Change is coming. We must keep pressing forward.

What We Are Doing

Voter Registration and Empowerment is one of the core priorities for Disciples Home Missions. We are assembling a panel of voting rights experts for an upcoming webinar, and we will release additional guidance and resources. We are also partnering with Disciples ministries, as well as ecumenical and interfaith organizations to make a difference.

This summer, in partnership with Faith Out Loud, Disciples Home Missions will host a workshop on protecting the right to vote at the Biennial Session of National Convocation in Dallas, Texas.

World Water Day

World Water Day

March 4, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

by Rev. Ryan Cullumber, Living Coast Ministry

Life on Earth depends on healthy ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems, such as wetlands, rivers, mangroves and aquifers, are a critical part of the global water cycle – supplying, purifying and protecting freshwater resources. We often do not think about where our water comes from and simply take it for granted when we turn on our taps. Water is the source of life and everyone needs access to clean and safe drinking water.

World Water Day is March 22nd. World Water Day celebrates water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis. Ecosystems supply, purify and protect freshwater resources. Apart from directly captured rainwater, humans get every drop of freshwater from either groundwater, surface water or frozen water.

Freshwater ecosystems such as wetlands and marshes mitigate the effects of floods and drought. These important ecosystems protect the land from erosion and inundation and help to regulate water flows. These freshwater ecosystems are also important breeding grounds for aquatic animals and migratory birds. Because of habitat loss and the dangers of pollution, biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems is in danger. In fact freshwater species are going extinct more rapidly than terrestrial or marine species.

Another benefit of preserving these wild places is that wetlands such as mangroves, seagrasses, marshes and swamps are highly effective carbon sinks that absorb and store carbon dioxide. All these ecosystems are examples of how the natural world acts like the body of Christ, each with an important and vital role to play.

Harbor Christian Church has established a program called Living Coast Ministry (formerly Blue Theology) that focuses on the interconnection between the natural marine world and the divine. Our Living Coast Theologians enjoy a week-long summer residential program at Harbor Christian Church in Newport Beach, California. Harbor is located just across the street from the Upper Newport Back Bay. Being located in coastal Southern California gives us access to many wild places that most people never have the opportunity to experience. Living Coast Ministry at Harbor supports participants in visiting these natural wonders while helping to develop an ecological spirituality.

What do we mean by ecological spirituality? Throughout the week, each group enjoys hands-on experiences that deeply connect them to the surrounding ocean and shoreline ecology. Each evening participants are led in discussions, sacred experiences and activities that support them in crafting their unique ecological lens on spirituality. In other words, Living Coast Ministry brings together real world experience and the sacred, allowing participants to ask new questions of their faith and to open to more expansive experiences of the divine.

We love the opportunity to host youth groups and their chaperones from all over the country. To date we have hosted groups from Minnesota, Colorado, Kentucky and Maryland as well as local groups from Southern California. Our Living Coast Ministry team would love to hear from and potentially host you and your group. Shared Witness and Wisdom from MARCH Minnesota

January 31, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

In response to ICE, on January 22-23 faith leaders from around the country “answered the call to Minneapolis” put forth by the local, faith-based organizing coalition MARCH. This was a working convening rooted in accountability to impacted communities and designed to build the relationships, skills, and commitments needed
for sustained action across the country.

Rev. Brian Frederick-Gray, Director for Justice & Advocacy Ministries at DHM, was one of hundreds of faith leaders who came. “We were invited to learn what was happening in Minnesota, support our siblings in faith, and take their lessons back to our own contexts,” he reflected.

This handout is one step in sharing learnings from the MARCH events.

World Wetlands Day

January 30, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

Every year World Wetlands Day is celebrated around the world on February 2nd. This year’s theme is “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage.” The global campaign spotlights the timeless role of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems and preserving cultural identity.

Wetlands are incredibly valuable not only for the species that live and thrive there but for all living things on this planet. Wetlands are an integral part of God’s creation and protecting and preserving them for future generations is one of our callings at Living Coast Ministries.

Ivonne Higuero, Secretary-General of CITES shared this important message about World Wetlands Day. “Wetlands are more than ecosystems, they are story keepers. They carry the traditions, practices and wisdom of communities who have lived alongside them since the beginning of time. This year’s theme, Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge, Celebrating Cultural Heritage, reminds us that conserving wetlands also means conserving the cultural identity woven into them.”

As we approach World Wetlands Day 2026, under the theme ‘Celebrating cultural heritage,’ we recognize the vital role wetlands play in preserving traditional wisdom and practices, sustaining biodiversity, climate resilience and water security. It is time to reaffirm our commitment to protecting these essential ecosystems. Wetlands are not just natural resources—they are foundational to our shared future. Let’s come together to protect and restore them, ensuring their benefits for generations to come.

Harbor Christian Church has established Living Coast Ministry to focus on the interconnection between the natural marine world and the divine. The Living Coast Theologians we host enjoy a week-long summer residential program at Harbor Christian Church in Newport Beach, California.

Justice and Creation Fellows Applications Open Jan. 30-March 16, 2026

January 30, 2026 by Chris Liu-Beers

  • For Ministry Sites and Young Fellows growing creation care, climate justice and love of neighbor
  • Seeking Ministry Sites within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
  • Summer Fellows between ages 16-26
  • Grants for $3000 per ministry ($2500 for Fellow and 500 support)
  • Deadline for Collaborative Application is March 16th, 2026

The Green Chalice Ministry and Disciples Home Missions are hosting a cohort of Justice and Creation Fellows this summer.  We will be offering grants of $3000 to DOC churches, regions, and camps (with preference given to churches). These grants aim to support the development of youth and young adult leaders (ages 16-26)  engaged in the spiritual movement for creation care, climate justice, and/or social justice.  A central goal of this grant program is to foster a culture of curiosity, connection, compassion and justice in faith leadership that goes beyond a focus on individual behaviors to collectively address the institutions and systems responsible for the present crises. Grants will promote a creation justice movement that recognizes and engages the root causes of injustice, climate crisis and systemic change. Priority will be given to those seeking to advance justice, creation care, and climate solutions that effectively center the needs of those most impacted by environmental degradation and the  climate crisis. Ministries led by and/or serving communities that are Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color are highly encouraged to apply. First time applicants will have priority. We are seeking 12 ministry sites to join the 2026 cohort this summer.

Download the 2026 Application

2024/25 Ministry Sites offered fellowships to 25 young adult fellows that offered creation care leadership in ??? regions. They advocated for justice, grew communities and pollinator friendly plants, harvested hope and veggies, preserved waterways and taught faithful ways of caring for the earth and neighbors. “Working alongside Montagnard families in the garden showed me God’s love through community and service. Caring for creation through composting and gardening reminded me of God’s renewal in the earth. I also saw God in cultural traditions like dance, language, and storytelling, which carry strength and resilience through generations.”-

    Natalie Siu, Fellow,
    St. Paul’s Christian Church, NC
  • “We started a brand new Farmers Market

and expanded our garden significantly. We increased our CSA sales, pantry donations, and have two flourishing market access programs for low income, households experiencing food insecurity.”

    Kristy ~ Mentor
    Harmony Christian Church, Uniontown, OH
  • “I noticed God everywhere.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected to my spirituality this summer, but I felt God in the gardens, in the compassion and commitment of the congregation, and in the work that I and others were doing.”

    Cecily ~ Fellow
Ridglea Christian Church, Fort Worth, TX
  • “I am grateful to Green Chalice for the ways God is working through this ministry.“

“Ridglea Christian Church really benefited from receiving this grant last summer. Actually, the relationship with the Young Adult Fellow is still ongoing. While still staying connected to the garden ministry, she is now teaching Worship and Wonder on Sunday mornings and is leading youth group on Sunday nights. As a mom of one of those youth, I am grateful to Green Chalice for the ways God is working through this ministry.”

    Rev. Christy Drechsel

In the News: Updates on Important Stories

Viral Warnings of Planned ICE Raids on Churches have Pastors Worried
Reporting from the Religion News Service shares that viral reports and online rumors about potential ICE raids on churches have faith leaders worried about their congregations. The Dept of Homeland Security says it does not have plans to raid churches — but will not rule it out.

After the Blitz: What Our Chicago Neighbors are Facing in ICE Detention
This report from the National Immigrant Justice Center provides a snapshot of where people have been taken and the conditions they are facing after being abducted by ICE agents during recent raids in Chicago. Through exhaustive research and first person testimonials it chronicles inhuman detention conditions and due process violations and then concludes with a call to action to defend our neighbors.

US Immigration Courts at a Crisis Point
The Migration Policy Institute recorded a webinar discussing their latest policy brief, “Breaking the Cycle of Dysfunction at the US Immigration Courts” that offers evidence-based analysis, deep dialogue, and pragmatic policy solutions that could transform the process.

Faith Voices: Theological Reflections on Current Events

Clergy are Essential to Resistance Against ICE, Chicago Pastor Says
From our friends at Bapist News Global: “The visibility and voice of clergy are indispensable to the protest movement forming against President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration tactics,” said Rev. Dr. Michael Woolf, a Chicago-area pastor recently arrested outside a federal detention center.

The Love Your Neighbor Prayer Book
Beautifully written and illustrated by Sergio Cortes, this downloadable PDF prayer book contains seven daily prayers with specific words for immigrants and for allies. This prayer book was created in recognition that the present situation is darker for the immigrant community in ways we haven’t seen before. Real harm is being done. We can no longer turn a blind eye.

Visitation Ministry Offers Compassion to those Impacted by Immigration Detention
Our friends at Presbyterian Disaster Assistance recently highlighted the migration ministry
El Refugio in Georgia. The ministry combats the isolation and dehumanization of immigration detention by providing hospitality, visitation, support, and advocacy.

Faith in Action: Toolkits and Advocacy Guides

WoC & Obra Hispana: Operation Cacti: Compassion Care Project
A partnership of Obra Hispana and Week of Compassion, Operation Cacti is an educational and biblical resource designed for families, pastors, and churches being directly affected by the current immigration policies and for those who seek to be in solidarity with them.

CWS: Take Action to Stop Collective Punishment of Refugees and Asylum Seekers

RCUSA Talking Points: Rapid Response Messaging to the USCIS Memo Ordering the Review and Re-Interview of All Biden-Era Refugee Arrivals
In response to the recent US Citizenship and Immigration Services memo that ordered a “review and re-interview” of all refugees who entered via the US Refugee Admissions Program during the Biden administration, Refugee Council USA created this rapid response guide.

Congregational Toolkit: Supporting Immigrants and Welcoming Strangers
The North Carolina Council of Churches designed this toolkit to equip faith leaders and congregations with practical resources to respond to the current immigration enforcement landscape. It provides talking points, worship materials, a congregational litany, Scripture references, and actionable steps your community can take to support immigrant neighbors.

In the Know: Explainer Articles from Trusted Partners

GlobalRefuge.org: Understanding the Expansion of the Sweeping Travel Ban
Global Refuge
strongly condemns the Trump administration’s decision to dramatically expand its travel ban, escalating a policy first announced in June that already restricted entry for nationals from 19 countries. The new proclamation broadens those restrictions to 39 countries worldwide, further limiting lawful travel and migration through a sweeping mix of full and partial entry bans.

RefugeeRights.org: Explainer on New Trump Admin Policies Impacting Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Afghan Nationals, and Immigrants from Travel Ban Countries
This downloadable resource from the International Refugee Assistance Project lists each of the policies from the Trump Administration and answers questions about their general impact.
