May 19, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

After the Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Disciples Home Missions hosted a panel discussion on Voting Rights, Faith, and Democracy that features:

  • Rev. Chris Dorsey President and CEO of Disciples Home Missions
  • Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner Founder of the Skinner Leadership Institute and Co-Convener of Faiths United to Save Democracy
  • Rev. Dr. Katie Sexton Executive Director of the Arizona Faith Network and a 2026 “The Vote Is Sacred” Fellow with Interfaith America
  • Rev. Brian Frederick-Gray (facilitator) Director for Justice and Advocacy Ministries at Disciples Home Missions

The panelist have a robust and insightful conversation about four specific issues:

  • How do we help people in the pews understand what’s been lost by this decision in Louisiana v. Callais — especially those who have only studied the Civil Rights Movement in History Class?
  • What scriptures, traditions, or spiritual teachings can you point us to that call us to protect the right to vote — especially for communities that have been historically excluded?
  • Parts of the wider church have historically been an organizing infrastructure for voting rights movements — from voter registration drives to candidate forums to transportation to the polls. What does that infrastructure look like today, and where are the gaps? What new tools, strategies, or coalitions do faith communities need to build for this moment?
  • If someone leaves this conversation and does one thing — one concrete act before the elections this Fall — what should it be?

Scripture Passages Cited

  • Proverbs 31:8
  • Matthew 25:35-40
  • Micah 6
  • Exodus
  • Psalm 11
  • Acts 2:1-21

Discussion Questions Going Forward

Once you’ve completed the video use the following questions for a small group conversation, for personal reflection, or as journaling prompts

  • What is your first memory of voting? Why is participating in the democratic process important to you? If it is not, why not?
  • What scripture passages, Christian traditions, or faith practices speak to you the most in this moment? What empowers you to work to protect voting rights and voter empowerment, particularly for communities that have been historically excluded?
  • If you were to follow Dr. Williams-Skinner’s invitation to “take five” then who would you included in your list of friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and/or colleagues that you will talk to in order to encourage them to exercise their right to vote this year? List them.
  • Building on what Rev. Dr. Katie Sexton said about “preparing your own personal voting plan,” how are you planning to exercise your right to vote this year? Be specific in your plans and build in an accountability system to help you follow through.

World Water Day

Mar 4, 2026
World Water Day is March 22nd. World Water Day celebrates water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis. Ecosystems supply, purify and protect freshwater resources. Apart from directly captured rainwater, humans get every drop of freshwater from either groundwater, surface water or frozen water.

World Water Day

March 4, 2026 by Brian Frederick-Gray

by Rev. Ryan Cullumber, Living Coast Ministry

Life on Earth depends on healthy ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems, such as wetlands, rivers, mangroves and aquifers, are a critical part of the global water cycle – supplying, purifying and protecting freshwater resources. We often do not think about where our water comes from and simply take it for granted when we turn on our taps. Water is the source of life and everyone needs access to clean and safe drinking water.

World Water Day is March 22nd. World Water Day celebrates water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis. Ecosystems supply, purify and protect freshwater resources. Apart from directly captured rainwater, humans get every drop of freshwater from either groundwater, surface water or frozen water.

Freshwater ecosystems such as wetlands and marshes mitigate the effects of floods and drought. These important ecosystems protect the land from erosion and inundation and help to regulate water flows. These freshwater ecosystems are also important breeding grounds for aquatic animals and migratory birds. Because of habitat loss and the dangers of pollution, biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems is in danger. In fact freshwater species are going extinct more rapidly than terrestrial or marine species.

Another benefit of preserving these wild places is that wetlands such as mangroves, seagrasses, marshes and swamps are highly effective carbon sinks that absorb and store carbon dioxide. All these ecosystems are examples of how the natural world acts like the body of Christ, each with an important and vital role to play.

Harbor Christian Church has established a program called Living Coast Ministry (formerly Blue Theology) that focuses on the interconnection between the natural marine world and the divine. Our Living Coast Theologians enjoy a week-long summer residential program at Harbor Christian Church in Newport Beach, California. Harbor is located just across the street from the Upper Newport Back Bay. Being located in coastal Southern California gives us access to many wild places that most people never have the opportunity to experience. Living Coast Ministry at Harbor supports participants in visiting these natural wonders while helping to develop an ecological spirituality.

What do we mean by ecological spirituality? Throughout the week, each group enjoys hands-on experiences that deeply connect them to the surrounding ocean and shoreline ecology. Each evening participants are led in discussions, sacred experiences and activities that support them in crafting their unique ecological lens on spirituality. In other words, Living Coast Ministry brings together real world experience and the sacred, allowing participants to ask new questions of their faith and to open to more expansive experiences of the divine.

We love the opportunity to host youth groups and their chaperones from all over the country. To date we have hosted groups from Minnesota, Colorado, Kentucky and Maryland as well as local groups from Southern California. Our Living Coast Ministry team would love to hear from and potentially host you and your group. A Moral Response to the Presidential Determination setting the Refugee Resettlement Number at 7,500 for FY 2026

Oct 31, 2025
Now is an urgent time to call on our elected leaders and urge them to call on the administration to reverse course and restore the refugee admissions program for the most at-risk refugees around the world.

A Moral Response to the Presidential Determination setting the Refugee Resettlement Number at 7,500 for FY 2026

October 31, 2025 by Brian Frederick-Gray

The Trump administration has set the refugee admissions target for Fiscal Year 2026 at 7,500 – with the vast majority of slots reserved for white South Africans. No president other than Trump, regardless of party, has ever set a refugee admissions goal below 60,000.

Now is an urgent time to call on our elected leaders and urge them to call on the administration to reverse course and restore the refugee admissions program for the most at-risk refugees around the world.

Our friends at Church World Service have put together these sample scripts calling on Congress to use their authority to respond to this dire situation. You can use commoncause.org/find-your-representative to find the contact information for your two US Senators and one member of the US House of Representatives. Then you can customize either of these scripts to make your voice heard.

SAMPLE PHONE SCRIPT

My name is [NAME] and as your constituent from [CITY and STATE], and a [person of faith/refugee/member of the community], I am outraged by the administration setting a record low refugee admissions target for the coming year, with slots reserved almost exclusively for white South Africans.

This is a moral failure. It undermines the integrity of our refugee program and breaks our promise to many refugees already approved for U.S. resettlement. This decision effectively closes the door to tens of thousands of refugees who have been waiting for years in the pipeline and have already been approved for refugee status.

The Presidential Declaration sets a refugee ceiling of 7,500 for FY 2026, which would be by far the lowest number in the history of the program. No president other than Trump, regardless of party, has ever set a refugee admissions goal below 60,000.

I strongly urge you and your office to stand with refugees and encourage the Trump administration to fully restore the refugee resettlement program and resume resettlement for the most at-risk refugees around the world.

I further urge your office to support key refugee funding accounts like the Refugee and Entrant Assistance account and the Migration and Refugee Assistance account, as well as vital legislation like the Afghan Adjustment Act and the Enduring Welcome Act.

SAMPLE EMAIL SCRIPT

Greetings,

My name is [insert name], and as your constituent from [City/Town] and a [person of faith/refugee/member of the community], I urge you and your office to stand with refugees as the Presidential Determination has set a  historically low refugee admissions target for FY 2026 – with slots reserved almost exclusively for white South Africans. This is a moral failure. It undermines the integrity of our refugee program and breaks our promise to many refugees already approved for U.S. resettlement.

I urge you to use your voice and oversight capacity to call on the administration to properly consult with Congress on the admissions target as required by law and urge them to fully restore the refugee resettlement program for the most at-risk refugees around the world.

The Presidential Determination sets a refugee ceiling of 7,500 for FY 2026, which would be by far the lowest number in the history of the program. No president other than Trump, regardless of party, has ever set a refugee admissions goal below 60,000.

The move effectively closes the door to tens of thousands of already-approved refugees who have been waiting for years in the pipeline, including: Refugees from the world’s largest displacement crises in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ukraine, Venezuela, and elsewhere; Afghan allies fleeing retribution for their support of the U.S. government; persecuted religious minorities; unaccompanied refugee children; families awaiting reunification; refugees with severe medical conditions; and many others.

All would remain stranded.

The Refugee Act of 1980 – which remains the law of the land – requires the administration to hold an “appropriate consultation” with Congress outlining the global refugee situation and why the proposed admission is justified by “grave humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest.”

As a person of faith I stand with the refugee, the sojourner, and the stranger. I strongly urge you and your office to stand with refugees and encourage the Trump administration to fully restore the refugee resettlement program and resume resettlement for the most at-risk refugees around the world.

A growing majority of Americans support welcoming refugees and newcomers. Refugees bring enormous economic and sociocultural benefits to the communities where they resettle; they are small business owners, tax contributors, and job creators. Our community welcomes refugees, and I encourage you to do so as well.

Thank you,

Refugee Program Updates During the US Government Shutdown

There are currently no refugees being resettled in the U.S. and tens of thousands of refugees who were approved for resettlement when the Trump administration’s ban took effect are still stranded overseas.

Trump Administration Plans to Cut Refugee Admissions to a Record Low
President Trump reportedly signed a Presidential Determination that would slash the refugee program to a historic low of 7,500 refugees with many slots reserved for white South Africans. Last year’s refugee resettlment cap was 125,000. The record low for any other President is 60,000.

Faith Leaders Condemn Administration Efforts to Abandon Historic US Refugee Program In a press release Church World Service alongside its fellow Covenant Members condemned White House efforts to abandon the US Refugee Program, and issued this statement as a rallying cry for the nation’s faith communities to unify in the name of the stranger and the sojourner.

Background: Congressional Consultations Required by the Refugee Act of 198
At this time, no refugees can be resettled because the administration failed to conduct appropriate consultations with Congress before setting a Presidential Determination (PD) on Refugee Admissions as it is required to do under the Refugee Act of 1980, CWS explains.

Strong Majority of US Voters Continue to Support the Refugee Program
New polling from Refugee Advocacy Lab, Refugees International, and Data for Progress shows that a large majority of voters support the U.S. having a refugee program and oppose many of the current administration’s recent anti-immigrant policies.

Faith Groups Outraged at Lowest Refugee Admission Goal in US History
Guided by diverse faith traditions, the Interfaith Immigration Coalition shares collective alarm that the current administration intends to drastically slash the refugee resettlement program and abandon refugees fleeing persecution and war. The IIC stands against the exclusion of any refugee simply because of who they are, where they come from, or what they believe.

TAKE ACTION: Stand with Stranded Refugees
This action alert from our friends at Church World Service allows you to contact your two US Senators and one Representative and urge them to call on the administration to reverse course and restore the refugee admissions program for the most at-risk refugees around the world.
