Beyond the Pageant:

A Christian Call to Truth and

Reconciliation on America’s

250th Anniversary

As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, the air is

filled with fireworks, pageantry, and curated

national myths. But as followers of Jesus Christ,

we are called to a deeper, honest reflection.

The Apostle John provides our marching orders:

“Let us love, not in words or speech, but in truth

and action.” (1 John 3:18; NRSV)

How do we live this mandate today? I invite us to

confront these questions: Who are we to be as

Christians living our faith authentically? Who would

Christ be in our midst? Whom would He fight for?

Who Would Christ Be?

To understand our role in a secular society, we must strip away cultural distortions that

domesticate our faith. Christ would not be a conqueror or a mascot for white Christian

nationalism — a project that conscripts the Gospel into a worldly agenda of power and

dominion.

Instead, remember a radically different Savior: a Palestinian Jew living under the

oppressive Roman Empire; a refugee who knew the terror of displacement from his

childhood; and a revolutionary executed by the state for standing with the marginalized

and breaking systems of colonization. Jesus chose the path of the “least of these.” To find

Him today, we must look toward the margins.

Who Would Christ Actively Love and Fight For?

To love in truth, we must confess the “defective cornerstone” upon which this nation was

built, where a perverted freedom was rooted in the dominion over others. Christ’s love

compels us to fight alongside those bearing its scars:

Our Indigenous Siblings: Christ stands with the original sovereigns of this soil,

whose lands were stolen under the heresy of the Doctrine of Discovery.

Descendants of Enslaved Africans: Christ fights for the dignity of those whose

kidnapped labor built the foundational wealth of this nation. Our Global Neighbors: Christ stands with our siblings in the Global South, where

economic dominion and resource extraction prioritize greed.

The Immigrant and Sojourner: Christ welcomes refugees fleeing violence, rejecting

walls of exclusion that dishonor human dignity and the health of families.

Moving from Words to Action

We cannot honor God with our lips while our policies remain far from our neighbors. Living

as Christians means refusing comfortable lies and committing to work for reparatory

justice:

Repair Our Economy: Advocate for systems centering the safety, health, sufficiency

and debt relief of families, rather than hoarding wealth for the few.

Reconstruct Our Democracy: Ensure every voice is heard, standing firmly against

efforts to gerrymander votes or silence our history.

Restore the Land: Honor Indigenous sovereignty and seek pathways to repair the

global harms caused by extraction.

The Journey Ahead

As Disciples, let us choose actions over empty speech and truth over our national

mythology. Together, let us build a land where justice rolls down like waters and

righteousness like a mighty stream.

In the name of the One who makes all things new, let us begin the repair.

Interim Ministry Basics – Fall 2026

Mar 17, 2026
Are you looking for a new adventure ministry? Want to serve a congregation that is between settled pastors and help them effect positive change? Bring your gifts and develop your skills for this adventure in specialized ministry!

Interim Ministry Basics – Fall 2026

March 17, 2026 by Scott Woolridge

Are you looking for a new adventure in ministry?

Our Interim Ministry Basics course is being offered twice in 2026!

We’ve trained over 200 students in the last few years. Their response to the class has been great!

We’re offering a new, revised curriculum with updated resources. This new offering is interactive and collegial and practical.

Here is the course syllabus for our next offering (Spring, 2026).

Topics to be covered include –

  • What is interim ministry? And how is it different from settled ministry?
  • What gifts and skills are needed for interim ministry? What tools are needed?
  • What are the issues congregations need to talk about during the interim time?
  • What insights from Family Systems Theory can enhance our ministry together?
  • What is the role of the Transition Team?
  • How do we lead a meaningful experience in spiritual discernment/visioning?
  • How do we handle issues of change? And of conflict?
  • How do we “take these lessons home with us?” Practical application

The course will be offered in 8 sessions on Mondays from September 14 through November 2, 7:00 – 9:00 pm Eastern Time. There will be an orientation session offered on September 13.

Who should take the training?

Ministers in any age and stage of their career, pulpit supply ministers, retired ministers who want to return to ministry, therapists/counselors/social workers who want to use their gifts and skills in a congregational setting, laity interested in becoming a commissioned minister

What is involved? Will there be homework?

The class meets on Monday nights from 7:00 – 9:00 pm Eastern Time with an optional after-session each week. There will be readings, videos and conversations each week in preparation for class sessions. There will also be a course project to help provide practical application of the concepts covered in the course.

What outcomes should I expect?

Students who complete the class will have a knowledge of interim ministry, how to have a strong start, gather a Transition Team, lead crucial conversations. Congregations led by interim ministers have the opportunity to become more healthy and more vital with a clearer vision of their next chapter together with a new settled pastor.

How much does it cost?

The 8 sessions will cost $600. Many Regional ministers are willing to share in the cost if the student offers to serve in an interim setting in the future.

Email us at Interims@dhm.disciples.org for more information and an application link.

  • Summer Fellows between ages 16-26
  • Grants for $3000 per ministry ($2500 for Fellow and 500 support)
  • Deadline for Collaborative Application is March 16th, 2026

The Green Chalice Ministry and Disciples Home Missions are hosting a cohort of Justice and Creation Fellows this summer.  We will be offering grants of $3000 to DOC churches, regions, and camps (with preference given to churches). These grants aim to support the development of youth and young adult leaders (ages 16-26)  engaged in the spiritual movement for creation care, climate justice, and/or social justice.  A central goal of this grant program is to foster a culture of curiosity, connection, compassion and justice in faith leadership that goes beyond a focus on individual behaviors to collectively address the institutions and systems responsible for the present crises. Grants will promote a creation justice movement that recognizes and engages the root causes of injustice, climate crisis and systemic change. Priority will be given to those seeking to advance justice, creation care, and climate solutions that effectively center the needs of those most impacted by environmental degradation and the  climate crisis. Ministries led by and/or serving communities that are Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color are highly encouraged to apply. First time applicants will have priority. We are seeking 12 ministry sites to join the 2026 cohort this summer.

“Working alongside Montagnard families in the garden showed me God’s love through community and service. Caring for creation through composting and gardening reminded me of God’s renewal in the earth. I also saw God in cultural traditions like dance, language, and storytelling, which carry strength and resilience through generations.”-

    Natalie Siu, Fellow,
    St. Paul’s Christian Church, NC
  • “We started a brand new Farmers Market

and expanded our garden significantly. We increased our CSA sales, pantry donations, and have two flourishing market access programs for low income, households experiencing food insecurity.”

    Kristy ~ Mentor
    Harmony Christian Church, Uniontown, OH
  • “I noticed God everywhere.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected to my spirituality this summer, but I felt God in the gardens, in the compassion and commitment of the congregation, and in the work that I and others were doing.”

    Cecily ~ Fellow
Ridglea Christian Church, Fort Worth, TX
  • “I am grateful to Green Chalice for the ways God is working through this ministry.“

“Ridglea Christian Church really benefited from receiving this grant last summer. Actually, the relationship with the Young Adult Fellow is still ongoing. While still staying connected to the garden ministry, she is now teaching Worship and Wonder on Sunday mornings and is leading youth group on Sunday nights. As a mom of one of those youth, I am grateful to Green Chalice for the ways God is working through this ministry.”
