“Sometimes we experience things in our lives that you don’t realize the significance of until much later.  I had the privilege of presiding at the funeral of Governor Ray…long term Governor of Iowa. Governor Ray grew up in my own faith tradition of Disciples of Christ, in First Christian Church of Des Moines,who learned the stories of Jesus about welcoming all people. He learned them so well that, when he had the chance to go to refugee camps…and he saw their suffering, he had compassion….When he came back, he spoke at our General Assembly, and said, ‘I believe we can never live with a clean conscience if we turn our backs on dying human beings, who cry out for a touch of life’….And then, with those stories of Jesus in his heart and mind, he went on, ‘Don’t tell me about your concern, show me’….He challenged the church to do something….and he came back to Iowa and challenged people to welcome refugees.”  –Rev.
