Executive Action Information and Responses

(July 12, 2016) Disciples have partnered with other national faith partners to develop a faith resource that educates faith communities about the recent Supreme Court decision, and also calls faith communities to action in solidarity with immigrant families seeking freedom from fear of family separation, detention, and deportation. We hope this information can be helpful in your personal conversations with immigrants in your communities, and also for your congregation to use as a study guide, and preparation for action to support immigrants in your church community.  See resource here.

Another great resource that helps families prepare for moving forward and helping communities conduct outreach to share resources, understand forms of relief they may access, protect themselves against deportation, and support naturalization efforts.  The resource is called “The Fight Continues:  Building Power, Capacity and Collaboration in the Field,” and was presented by advocacy partners across the country on July 12.  See this resource here.

What Might Happen in U.S. v. Texas Now That the Supreme Court Has Heard the Oral Argument?

Mecedes shares hopes about DAPA(May 13, 2016) Please see the link here about possible outcomes when the Supreme Court issues a decision on the Texas v. U.S.—sometimes called the “DACA/DAPA+” case. A decision continues to be anticipated to come perhaps in June.

SCOTUS Hears Arguments For Immigration Executive Actions

(April 20, 2016) Thousands gathered to urge the Supreme Court to uphold President Obama’s actions on immigration. Four Disciples clergy were among those on Monday, during oral arguments in the case of Texas v. US, which has blocked Executive Action since it was announced by Obama in November of 2014. Hear one of their prayers.

Disciples clergy there included Woodie Rea, Washington, D.C., Cheri Métier of Sam Diego, Laurie Andersen of Kansas City, and Refugee & Immigration Director Sharon Stanley-Rea.

Supreme Court Will Rule On Obama’s Immigration Policy Before 2016 Election

WASHINGTON (January 19, 2016) — President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration, stuck in legal limbo for the past year, will get a Supreme Court hearing before the 2016 presidential election.

The justices announced their decision to hear the case, known as United States v. Texas, on Tuesday, after their private conference meeting Friday morning. For weeks, the federal government and Texas had fought a procedural battle over whether the justices should take up the case before the end of June, the close of the court’s current term.

The president can now seek Supreme Court vindication of his decision in November 2014 to defer the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants, who have waited for years for comprehensive immigration reform. Read more.

Supreme Court Hands Obama Small But Important Win In Immigration Fight

It just became much more likely that the president
will get his immigration plan reviewed by the justices.

WASHINGTON (December 1, 2015) — It looks like President Barack Obama may get a chance to defend his immigration policies in court before he leaves office.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a request from the federal government that essentially secures timely consideration of Obama’s executive actions on immigration — raising the likelihood that the justices will hear the case in the spring and decide it by the end of June, when their current term ends.

Since the administration filed its appeal of the case to the Supreme Court in late November, Texas and U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli had been embroiled in a procedural tussle over timing. Texas, the lead plaintiff in 26 states’ suit against the executive actions Obama announced last year, had been seeking to delay consideration of the appeal, while Verrilli argued that a delay was unwarranted. Coalition of Immigration, Civil Rights, Labor, and Social Service Groups Urges Supreme Court to Protect President’s Executive Actions on Immigration

Legal Brief Filed by 224 Groups Pushes High Court to Hear Landmark Immigration Case, Texas v. U.S.

Washington, D.C. (December 1, 2015) — A coalition of 224 immigration, civil rights, labor, and social service groups has filed an amicus (“friend of the court”) brief, urging the Supreme Court to review the case, Texas v. U.S., that has blocked some of President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. The filing comes less than a month after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld a preliminary injunction put in place by a Texas federal district court that blocked implementation of protections for millions of immigrants across the country. Executive Action – One Year!

Exec Action Anniversary Rally White House4 11_20_2015(November 20, 2015) TODAY is one year since the announcement of Executive Action to bring relief to immigrants–and today the Dept. of Justice filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to consider this case, which has been held up in court and blocking implementation of DACA and DAPA since its announcement.  Next, we anticipate that the Supreme Court will rule early next year on whether or not they will take the case.  If so, a decision could potentially be reached around June of 2016.  Please see photos here of advocates at the White House today–one year later. And, please check regularly for updated information on the progress of the case’s journey to the Supreme Court, and how you can prepare now for its implementation.

Remembering the One Year Anniversary of Executive Action, and Preparing for Next Steps Ahead

(November 16, 2015) THIS FRIDAY, November 20th, will mark one year since President Obama took executive action to announce immigration relief which could have offered temporary assistance and healing to 4-5 million undocumented immigrants and their families.  Since nearly the time of the announcement, implementation of key provisions of the President’s relief, such as extended DACA and DAPA, have been blocked by the courts.  Last week, in the wake of a latest ruling by the 5th Circuit Court, DHM issued the following statement.  Now THIS WEEK, we encourage you to consider reading information on “next steps” from the National Immigration Law Center, and JOIN IN A LOCAL ACTION TO MARK THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF EXECUTIVE ACTION, AND PREPARE FOR THESE NEXT STEPS, IN YOUR AREA!!  See a list of multiple actions around the country. And, please contact our office at:  sstanley@dhm.disciples.org or 202-957-7826 if you are aware of other events—and to share your pictures as you participate in actions this week!!

Religious leaders call Fifth Circuit ruling on immigration unjust, call on Supreme Court to take it up

In response to the Fifth Circuit Court’s decision on DAPA and expanded DACA, faith leaders call for Supreme Court to reverse decision

WASHINGTON (November 11, 2015) – Following the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Texas v. U.S., religious leaders and faith-based organizations across the country are asking the Supreme Court to support the Obama administration’s appeal and reverse the ruling.Last November, President Obama announced executive actions to create the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) program and expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in an effort to provide relief from deportation for more than five million undocumented individuals. Now nearly one year later, the Fifth Circuit Court has upheld an injunction against the actions, leaving millions of individuals separated from their families and living in fear of deportation. Read more and read statement from Rev. Ronald J. Degges, President of Disciples Home Missions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

RIM Director joins dozens of immigrants in DC for a Press Conference, and at Congressional Hearings, related to the President’s recent announcement for Executive Action on immigration.

iAmerica has developed a new eligibility tool to help you determine if you or a loved one qualify for DAPA. This new tool walks you through a series of questions one by one to help determine if you meet the requirements to apply for DAPA. It also gives you feedback about whether you should discuss your application with a lawyer based on the information you provided.

  • On Monday, March 30th, 2015 the Interfaith Immigration Coalition hosted a webinar on Prosecutorial Discretion and ICE Accountability. Is Immigration Customs Enforcement executing the new Prosecutorial Discretion guidelines appropriately? There are indicators that show ICE is not following these new Department of Homeland Security guidelines, such as the recent deportation of Mennonite Pastor Max in Iowa, the lack of granting discretion to certain cases of individuals living in Sanctuary, and ICE Director Saldana’s recent comments in a congressional hearing in support of forcing local police to comply with ICE detainers to hold immigrants. As we continue to wait for the appeals process of the Texas court ruling that delayed the implementation of  DAPA/expanded DACA, and as ICE has been targeting any immigrant with a criminal conviction through “Operation Crosscheck,” the faith community must hold ICE accountable to implementing Prosecutorial Discretion appropriately.Speakers:

Farm Worker Thanksgiving in DCNovember 20, 2014

Dear Disciples Partners,

As you have no doubt heard through most recent news, the White House revealed yesterday afternoon that President Obama will announce at 8 p.m. ET TONIGHT his plans for Executive Actions to fix some elements of our nation’s broken immigration system. It was gratifying to hear this news immediately following return yesterday outside the White House with farm workers who have traveled across the country this week to offer a “Thanksgiving invitation” to urge the President to take such action. They testified as the faces of immigrants-like those pictured here–who grow our food, improve our economy, and have invested for so many years in U.S. communities. Read more.
